Trump threatens European Union with new tariffs in scathing statement after discussions go ‘nowhere’

President Donald Trump has escalated his trade war with the European Union, threatening to impose 50% tariffs on EU goods starting June 1, 2025. He accused the EU of unfair trade practices, including high barriers and a $250 billion annual trade deficit with the U.S., claiming negotiations have stalled. Trump previously proposed 20% tariffs in April but delayed them for 90 days to allow talks. Despite progress with the UK and China, no agreement has been reached with the EU.

The EU, led by Ursula von der Leyen, has expressed openness to negotiations but warned of countermeasures if necessary. Trump’s latest move follows earlier threats to hike tariffs on EU products like alcohol to 200%. The European Commission has yet to respond, pending discussions with U.S. officials. Meanwhile, Trump also warned Apple to move iPhone production to the U.S. or face 25% tariffs. The trade tensions continue to strain U.S.-EU relations.
