For four years, my family believed I was paying eighty-nine

Lucy, only eighteen, becomes the protector of her six younger siblings after their mother abandons them, leaving the children without adequate care. With help from neighbors, teachers, their aunt Vanessa, and the community, Lucy struggles to provide food, safety, and stability while continuing school. When their mother returns, court proceedings reveal neglect and misuse of trust money intended for the children. The judge grants Lucy temporary guardianship, keeps the siblings together, freezes the remaining funds, and limits their mother to supervised visits. Although Lucy loses valuable years of her youth, she finally stops losing her siblings.

As the years pass, Lucy raises her siblings with unwavering love while studying social work so she can help children like them. The family gradually heals, supported by people who refused to look away. Lucy never touches their recovered trust money, insisting it belongs entirely to her siblings. Eventually, they realize their family is no longer defined by the mother who abandoned them, but by the sister, neighbors, and community who stayed. As adults, the siblings build successful lives and continue helping others facing abandonment. Their story becomes one of survival, compassion, and the powerful truth that family can be created through love.
