Valeria, a 31-year-old woman, is repeatedly humiliated by her mother-in-law, Teresa, who searches her suitcase whenever she visits her parents and accuses her of stealing from the house. Despite Valeria paying most household expenses, including utilities, groceries, Teresa’s medication, repairs, and her husband Mauricio’s debts, she is treated like an unwanted guest. One morning, Teresa searches her suitcase again, and when Valeria finally confronts her, Mauricio unexpectedly slaps her twice and tells her not to disrespect his mother. Teresa supports him and tells Valeria that she needs to learn her place. Valeria leaves and goes to her parents’ home, where she finally reveals the truth about the abuse and financial sacrifices she has made for the marriage.
Her parents are devastated, and her father reveals that they had even sold her mother’s wedding earrings to help Valeria financially when she married Mauricio. Meanwhile, Mauricio sends Valeria a message minimizing the violence, calling it “two slaps” and demanding that she return and apologize to Teresa. Instead of going back, Valeria begins reviewing her bank statements and documenting everything she has paid for during the marriage. She realizes that the problem is much bigger than the suitcase searches and physical abuse: she may have been financing a household while being denied any respect or control over her own contributions. She contacts a lawyer to understand her options, expecting mainly to deal with the abuse and recover some of her money. However, as the financial records are examined, Valeria notices inconsistencies suggesting that Mauricio may have hidden important information about where her money was going. She realizes that the statements could reveal a much larger betrayal than she ever expected.
