The talented Arturo Gatti Jr. dreamed of following in his legendary father’s footsteps as a professional boxer.

Tragically, he has now been found dead in an apartment in Mexico City.

The boxing world is in shock after the hea“rtbreaking news that Arturo Gatti Jr., the 17-year-old son of legendary boxer Arturo ”Thunder” Gatti, has died. The World Boxing Association confirmed the teen’s passing on Wednesday.

Gatti Jr. was found in a Mexico City apartment where he lived with his mother, Amanda Rodrigues. Authorities have not released a cause of death.

“The WBA and the boxing world mourn the passing of Arturo Gatti Jr. His journey was just beginning, yet his spirit will live on, now he is reunited with his legendary father among the stars,” the WBA wrote on X.

“Our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

”Unfortunately not a rumor”
Boxer Jean Pascal also paid tribute on social media, writing: “Sixteen years after losing his father, the world loses another Gatti. The son of a legend, two fighters, one legacy, both gone too soon. May they reunite in peace.”

Gatti Jr. had been training in Mexico City with dreams of following in his father’s footsteps and making his professional debut. His coach, Moe Latif, confirmed the devastating news in an Instagram story: “It is unfortunately not a rumor or a joke. Arturo is gone. I’d appreciate if you stop reaching out at this time.”

Close family friend and bodyguard Chuck Zito shared his heartbreak on social media, writing: “It’s with a heavy heart that I have to say… R.I.P. to 17-year-old ARTURO GATTI JR… My condolences to Arturo Gatti Senior’s – Mom, Sisters, Brothers, and his daughter Sophia.”

The teen had faced a life intertwined with his father’s legacy. Gatti Sr., a two-weight world champion, tragically died at age 37 in Brazil in July 2009.

Italian-Canadian boxer Arturo Gatti Sr. passed away under mysterious circumstances. His Brazilian wife was initially arrested on suspicion of homicide, but an autopsy in Brazil later ruled his death a suicide, and she was released.

Gatti Jr. was just 10 months old at the time. “The smile is the same … just like his daddy,” Rodrigues said in a 2012 interview with 48 Hours Mystery. “He’s everything I asked God for. Junior makes me complete.”

Despite the tragedy surrounding his early life, Arturo Gatti Jr. showed promise in the ring. He shared training updates on social media, including sessions in the UK and photos with boxing legend Mike Tyson.

In May 2025, he teased an upcoming fight, preparing to step more fully into professional boxing. Reflecting on his father’s influence, Gatti Jr. shared a heartfelt message on Father’s Day:

“Today is a day of happiness and celebrating my father and being grateful for what he did for me and everyone else around him. You’re still my biggest inspiration. Every time I step in the ring, I feel you with me. You built the legacy. I’m here to carry it forward, with pride and purpose.

To all the fathers watching over their kids from above, your love still guides us.
Grateful for everything you left me, Dad. If God allows, I’ll take it even further. This one’s for you.”
