She Stole My Husband, Then Asked Me to Read His Letter

For forty years, June carried the belief that her first husband, Ray, had simply abandoned her for another woman, Delores. After becoming widowed again, June returned to her hometown and volunteered at a church bingo hall, only to discover that Delores was now blind and sitting at her table every Tuesday. Delores never recognized her, calling her “June” and even “her angel.” June secretly watched her suffer, wanting proof that stealing Ray had not brought her happiness. But everything changed when Delores confessed that Ray had once written June a letter begging to return home—and that Delores had stolen it from the mailbox.

With trembling hands, Delores gave June the forty-year-old letter and asked her to read it aloud. June recognized her old name on the envelope and finally revealed the truth: she was Ray’s wife. The letter proved Ray had regretted leaving and wanted a chance to return, but Delores had stolen June’s right to choose. June refused to forgive her immediately, explaining that the real wound was not losing Ray, but losing the choice to decide his fate herself. Still, she refused to let the letter destroy the life she had built afterward. The following Tuesday, June returned to bingo, gave Delores her real name, and played fairly—neither punishing nor rewarding her.
