Earlier this year, the village of Glenview was shaken to its core when\u00a0Officer Robert Fryc<\/strong>, a veteran of the police department, was killed in a violent crash while driving into work. Seven months later, the grief still lingers as his family, colleagues, and community continue to honor the man they called a brother.<\/p>\n

A Fatal Morning in Barrington<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On February 16, Fryc, 43, was on his way to work when his car was struck in a near head-on collision in\u00a0Barrington<\/strong>. Authorities say\u00a0Christopher Lopez, 23<\/strong>, veered across lanes on Northwest Highway after a night of drinking, slamming into Fryc\u2019s vehicle.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors allege Lopez admitted to consuming multiple drinks before getting behind the wheel. Though his blood alcohol level later tested below the legal limit, police say open tequila and cannabis residue were found in his car. Data collected also suggested he was speeding and never braked before impact.<\/p>\n

Lopez has been charged with\u00a0reckless hom**ide<\/strong>\u00a0and remains in custody pending trial.<\/p>\n

Mourning a Fallen Officer<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The tragedy left the\u00a0Glenview Police Department<\/strong>\u00a0reeling. Fryc had served since 2007, earning recognition just weeks earlier for his dedication to the force.<\/p>\n

\u201cOfficer Fryc was more than just a colleague. He was a part of our family and a part of this community. Our hearts are broken,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Police Chief\u00a0William Fitzpatrick<\/strong>\u00a0said in a statement.<\/p>\n

At the time,\u00a0Village President Michael Jenny<\/strong>\u00a0also expressed condolences, calling Fryc\u2019s death\u00a0\u201ca devastating loss.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

A Final Goodbye<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Funeral services were held on\u00a0February 21<\/strong>\u00a0at\u00a0Our Lady of the Wayside Catholic Church<\/strong>\u00a0in Arlington Heights. Despite frigid temperatures, mourners lined the streets, blue ribbons wrapped around trees, and an American flag flew at half-staff as Fryc\u2019s flag-draped casket was carried inside.<\/p>\n

Dozens of law enforcement officers from across the region attended, standing shoulder to shoulder with Fryc\u2019s family.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he was backing you up, you knew it was going to be OK,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said\u00a0Officer Gene Harlow<\/strong>, who trained alongside Fryc at the academy.<\/p>\n
