The\u00a0Washington Post<\/strong>\u00a0has fired opinion columnist\u00a0Karen Attiah<\/strong>\u00a0after a series of controversial social media posts she made in the wake of\u00a0Charlie Kirk\u2019s assassination<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Attiah confirmed the dismissal in a Substack essay Monday. The paper called her remards \u201cunacceptable social media posts.\u201d The posts came in the wake of the killing of Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of\u00a0Turning Point USA.<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of Attiah\u2019s posts on Bluesky read:\u00a0\u201cPart of what keeps America so violent is the insistence that people perform care, empty goodness and absolution for white men who espouse hatred and violence.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Another read:\u00a0\u201cRefusing to tear my clothes and smear ashes on my face in performative mourning for a white man that espoused violence is\u2026 not the same as violence<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The Washington Post accused her Bluesky posts of being\u00a0\u201cunacceptable,\u201d \u201cgross misconduct,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>and of endangering the physical safety of colleagues.<\/p>\n

Attiah\u2019s Response<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In her Substack piece, Attiah forcefully rejected the charges.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey rushed to fire me without even a conversation,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0she wrote.\u00a0\u201cThis was not only a hasty overreach, but a violation of the very standards of journalistic fairness and rigor the Post claims to uphold.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She said the reason for her firing was\u00a0\u201cspeaking out against political violence, racial double standards, and America\u2019s apathy toward guns.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Context of Kirk\u2019s Murder<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Kirk, a high-profile conservative commentator, was fatally shot last week. A 22-year-old Utah native named Tyler Robinson has been arrested and is due in court Tuesday.<\/p>\n
