Former President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk\u2019s death on social media, calling him \u201ca martyr for youth in America\u201d and offering condolences to his wife and family.<\/p>\n<p>During live coverage, MSNBC analyst Matthew Dowd criticized Kirk\u2019s rhetoric, calling him \u201cdivisive\u201d and linking his style of speech to a culture of hostility. He stated: \u201cHateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions. And that\u2019s the environment we are in.\u201d Dowd\u2019s remarks sparked immediate outrage, with viewers accusing him of insensitivity in the aftermath of a murder.<\/p>\n<p>MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler condemned the comments as \u201cinappropriate, insensitive, and unacceptable,\u201d and Dowd issued a public apology on social media, clarifying he never intended to blame Kirk for the attack. \u201cLet us all come together and condemn violence of any kind,\u201d he wrote. Dowd was dismissed shortly afterward.
