The Texas Supreme Court has rejected Governor Greg Abbott\u2019s request for an immediate ruling on whether Democratic lawmakers who fled the state can be removed from office, opting instead for a longer review process.<\/p>\n

Abbott had urged the court to act within 48 hours after House Democrats left Texas in early August to prevent a quorum and stall a vote on new congressional maps. But instead of a fast-track decision, justices gave both sides three weeks to file briefs, with responses due by September 4 \u2014 well after the current special session is expected to end, according to the Texas Tribune.<\/p>\n
