On the seafloor, hotspot volcanoes are frequent. However, Axial Seamount is also situated on the Juan de Fuca Ridge, which is a region where two enormous tectonic plates\u2014the Pacific and Juan de Fuca plates\u2014are continuously separating, leading to a persistent increase in pressure beneath the surface of the earth.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1824821\" data-uid=\"0bdf2\">\n<div id=\"mgw1824821_0bdf2\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"mgbox card-media\" data-template-type=\"container\">\n<div class=\"mgheader\">\n<p>Researchers at the National Science Foundation\u2019s Ocean Observatories Initiative Regional Cabled Array, a facility run by the University of Washington that tracks Axial Seamount activity, have found that the frequency of earthquakes has recently increased dramatically as the volcano inflates with more and more magma, suggesting an eruption may be imminent.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-4\">\n<div id=\"trendsparknews.com_responsive_2\" data-google-query-id=\"COG-lfD27o4DFezsEQgddt47SQ\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/23207117756\/trendsparknews.com\/trendsparknews.com_responsive_2_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cAt the moment, there are a couple hundred earthquakes a day, but that\u2019s still a lot less than we saw before the previous eruption,\u201d said William Wilcock, a marine geophysicist and professor at the University of Washington School of Oceanography who studies the volcano.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-5\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\">\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1824821\" data-uid=\"15359\">\n<div id=\"mgw1824821_15359\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"mgbox card-media\" data-template-type=\"container\">\n<div class=\"mgheader\">\n<p>\u201cI would say it was going to erupt sometime later (this year) or early 2026, but it could be tomorrow, because it\u2019s completely unpredictable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to geologists, a massive underwater volcano is displaying signals of an imminent eruption hundreds of miles off the coast of Oregon.
