Following the cancellation of The Late Show by CBS, late-night talk show hosts have united behind Stephen Colbert.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Colbert, 61, announced the news during the Thursday, July 17, episode taping of his late night show, saying,\u00a0\u201cBefore we start the show I want to let you know something that I found out just last night. Next year will be our last season, the network [CBS] will be ending The Late Show in May.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the audience booed, he continued:\u00a0\u201cI share your feelings. It\u2019s not just the end of our show but it\u2019s the end of The Late Show on CBS. I\u2019m not being replaced. This is all just going away. I do want to say that the folks at CBS have been great partners \u2026 And I\u2019m grateful to the audience, you, who have joined us every night, in here, out there, and all around the world.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

CBS executives released a statement addressing their decision that same day, revealing a\u00a0\u201cfinancial\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>choice led to the cancellation and it was not\u00a0\u201crelated in any way to the show\u2019s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Watch What Happens Live host told Deadline:\u00a0\u201cI think it\u2019s a sad day for late-night television. I think it\u2019s a sad day for CBS. I think Stephen Colbert is a singular talent. He\u2019s going to have an incredible next chapter.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I really thought I\u2019d ride this out with him for years to come. I\u2019m sad that my family and friends will need a new show to watch every night at 11:30. But honestly, he\u2019s really been a gentleman and a true friend over the years, going back to The Colbert Report, and I\u2019m sure whatever he does next will be just as brilliant.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFor as great a comedian and host he is, Stephen Colbert is an even better person,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Meyers, 51, wrote via Instagram. \u201cI\u2019m going to miss having him on TV every night but I\u2019m excited he can no longer use the excuse that he\u2019s \u2018too busy to hang out\u2019 with me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
