The result: a diagnosis of chronic venous insufficiency, a condition that, while not life-threatening, could affect his daily life in noticeable ways. Now, health experts are weighing in with a clearer picture of what this means for the former president.

Swelling Triggers Speculation
In recent weeks, photos and videos of Trump have sparked discussions about his health. Observers noticed prominent swelling around his ankles, prompting widespread speculation.

During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the rumors directly. She read a memorandum from Trump’s physician, Dr. Sean Barbabella, to clarify the situation.

“I know that many in the media have been speculating about bruising on the president’s hand and also swelling in the president’s legs,” Leavitt stated. “In the effort of transparency, the president wanted me to share a note from his physician with all of you today.”

Medical Findings: Chronic Venous Insufficiency
According to Dr. Barbabella’s report, Trump had been experiencing “mild swelling in his lower legs.” After a full diagnostic evaluation, including bilateral venous Doppler ultrasounds, he was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency—a common vascular condition, especially in individuals over 70.

Importantly, the examination found no signs of deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease, and all lab results came back normal. Trump also underwent an echocardiogram, which ruled out heart failure, kidney issues, or systemic illness.

What Is Chronic Venous Insufficiency?
According to CNN, the condition affects an estimated 150,000 people annually. It occurs when veins in the legs fail to efficiently return blood to the heart, often leading to swelling, cramping, skin discoloration, and aching. Factors like age, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle can significantly increase risk.

Dr. Jeremy Faust, assistant professor of emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School, commented on Trump’s diagnosis:

“This is a pretty normal part of aging, and especially for someone in the overweight to obese category, which is where the president has always been,” Faust told CNN. “But the bigger concern … is that symptoms like this do need to be evaluated for more serious conditions, and that is what happened.”

Could It Get Worse?
While the diagnosis is not considered dangerous on its own, other specialists have cautioned that it shouldn’t be taken lightly. Cardiologist Dr. Bernard Ashby noted that venous insufficiency can sometimes signal deeper health issues, such as elevated pressure in the heart or lungs—conditions that can worsen over time.

“Even though he’s diagnosed with a benign condition, venous insufficiency, by itself doesn’t necessarily mean it’s benign,” Ashby said. “I would want to know whether or not he has any evidence of increased pressures in the heart or lungs, and if so, what’s the cause of that?”

Dr. Chris Pernell added that limited movement, weight, and age can all contribute to the condition becoming progressively debilitating, even if it isn’t fatal.

“If a person is older, overweight, and not engaging in regular activity, chronic venous insufficiency can definitely occur,” she explained. “And while it is not life-threatening, it can be debilitating.”

Viral Speculation About a Catheter
Beyond his leg swelling, Trump also became the center of a different kind of online speculation. At a UFC event on June 9, a photo showing Trump receiving a championship belt sparked rumors that he might be wearing a Foley catheter under his pants.

Social media lit up with theories—some claiming visible tubing, others suggesting Trump had been using leg braces. One viral post alleged:

“Trump is absolutely wearing a Foley catheter… that line down his pants? Not a crease. It’s tubing.”

However, others pushed back on the theory, pointing out the lack of medical necessity for a catheter in an otherwise mobile person.

“That pant leg is close fitting and that perfectly straight line is a crease,” one user rebutted. “Foley catheters are not standard except post-procedure.”

What’s Next for Trump?
Although Trump’s chronic venous insufficiency is not a critical condition, it’s a health marker that may require lifestyle changes, compression treatments, or medical monitoring—especially as he continues campaigning and making public appearances.

As with any public figure, especially one as polarizing as Trump, health concerns will always draw attention. But for now, his team insists he is in stable condition, and the diagnosis should not raise major red flags.

Insufficiency — What It Means for His Health Former President Donald Trump underwent a medical examination on Thursday after public concern over swelling in his legs.
