Tragically, it was already too late.<\/p>\n \u201cI knew she\u2019d been dead for quite some time,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Rachael recalled.<\/p>\n A post-mortem revealed what Rachael had feared all along: Lila had died of pneumococcal meningitis \u2014 a condition that, if treated early, is often survivable.<\/p>\n The inquest into Lila\u2019s death was devastating. The jury ruled that her death was\u00a0preventable<\/strong>\u00a0and that\u00a0neglect had played a role<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cHad Lila been admitted and given antibiotics within the first hour of triage, her death would have been prevented,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n the jury concluded.<\/p>\n For 17 long months, Rachael and Lila\u2019s father, Darren Marsland, waited for answers.
