Progressive Democrats have encountered a significant obstacle in their attempts to remove former President Donald Trump from office due to his unexpected military attack on Iranian nuclear facilities, and it comes from within their own party.<\/p>\n
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and other progressive wing members renewed their calls for impeachment on Monday, but Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) dismissed them, saying the effort was \u201cdead on arrival\u201d and that impeachment is \u201cnot helpful\u201d as a haphazard political tactic.<\/p>\n
\u201cObviously not. In an interview with Fox News, Fetterman stated bluntly that \u201che [Trump] shouldn\u2019t be impeached.\u201d

Over the weekend, President Trump approved a surprise military operation that used a wave of bunker-busting bombs to target three Iranian nuclear enrichment facilities: Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. U.S. defense sources claim that the strike was intended to permanently impede Iran\u2019s nuclear weapons development.<\/p>\n
Shortly after the operation, Trump spoke to the nation, telling people that<\/p>\n
\u201cIran and we are not at war. The purpose of this targeted attack was to neutralize a growing and immediate nuclear threat.<\/p>\n
National security hawks and his Republican base applauded the action, but progressives quickly reacted negatively, claiming that Trump had overreached himself by failing to first consult Congress.<\/p>\n
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, who is regarded as a leader among the younger, more progressive members of the Democratic Party, quickly declared the strike to be \u201cunconstitutional.\u201d<\/p>\n
She posted on social media, saying, \u201cThe President\u2019s catastrophic decision to bomb Iran without authorization is a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her comments caused a brief spike in online support for Trump\u2019s third impeachment attempt, which is a first for the United States.<\/p>\n
However, both conservatives and prominent members of her own party swiftly rejected her proposal.<\/p>\n
Fetterman, who is well-known for his independence and working-class appeal, was blunt in his assessment of the risk of politicizing impeachment.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe that using that phrase actually lessens the seriousness of what impeachment is truly meant for,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) was strongly critical of Trump\u2019s decision, stating that the strike could worsen Middle East tensions, even though he did not endorse the impeachment discussion.<\/p>\n
The president \u201cfailed to seek congressional authorization,\u201d Jeffries stated, adding that \u201cDonald Trump bears complete and total responsibility for any adverse consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n
White House officials resisted, claiming that Jeffries would not answer his phone when contacted and that important members of Congress had been briefed beforehand.<\/p>\n
Republican lawmakers and officials supported Trump\u2019s decision, claiming it was well within his constitutional authority, in stark contrast to Democratic criticism.<\/p>\n
In an interview with Meet the Press, Vice President J.D. Vance defended the action as a valid defense. He declared, \u201cThe president has unambiguous authority to stop the spread of weapons of mass destruction.\u201d<\/p>\n
Americans were reminded by Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) that President Obama carried out comparable operations while in office \u2014 without being called for impeachment.<\/p>\n
Obama launched attacks on Yemen, Pakistan, Syria, and Libya. No one spoke,\u201d Lawler observed. \u201cBut the far-left goes crazy when Trump takes decisive action.\u201d<\/p>\n
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, also voiced his support for Trump\u2019s use of force, arguing that it was in line with historical precedent.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe biggest state sponsor of terrorism in the world, which yells \u2018Death to America,\u2019 just cannot be permitted to acquire and employ nuclear weapons,\u201d Johnson stated.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was a targeted, limited, and necessary strike that was in line with the actions of both party presidents.\u201d<\/p>\n
This moment is more about national security and constitutional consistency than it is about party politics for many Americans, particularly older voters who have experienced several presidents and wars.<\/p>\n
The fundamental query still stands: Should presidents have the authority to take swift action when faced with imminent dangers? Or, even in cases where timing is crucial, must Congress always be consulted?<\/p>\n
For the time being, impeachment seems to be out of the question, despite the fact that the attack on Iran has sparked yet another heated round of finger-pointing. Instead of pursuing a futile impeachment attempt, Democrats are likely to turn their attention to oversight hearings and public messaging in light of voices like Fetterman warning against taking any chances.<\/p>\n
