I stared at it so hard the room blurred.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Maisie\u2019s breathing hitched under the oxygen tube. Ruby stirred beneath the heated blanket and made a small broken sound in her sleep. The nurse, who had been calm through every monitor beep and every emergency call, pressed one hand to her mouth and looked away.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The officer said a snowplow driver had found the card tucked into Ruby\u2019s little purse when EMS was cutting off her wet coat. Then he told me the new part, the part that made my knees nearly fold beneath me.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A call had come in before the driver found them.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Not from my mother.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

From my father.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He had reported two \u201cunidentified children\u201d walking near Briar Creek Road and told dispatch he had no idea where they belonged. But the recorded call had caught Ruby crying in the background, calling him Grandpa, over and over.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

That was when Maisie turned her face toward the wall and stopped making any sound at all.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The officer reached for the second item in his pocket, and his voice dropped lower.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
