The beloved British actress who brought wit, warmth, and razor-sharp humor to the role of Sybil Fawlty in the timeless sitcom\u00a0Fawlty Towers<\/em>, has died at the age of 93.<\/p>\n

Her family confirmed that the legendary performer passed away \u201cpeacefully at home in London,\u201d surrounded by love, according to\u00a0BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Her sons, Samuel and Joseph, said in a statement:<\/p>\n

\u201cOur darling mother Prunella Scales died peacefully at home in London yesterday. She was 93. Although dementia forced her retirement from a remarkable acting career of nearly 70 years, she continued to live at home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Struggling to remember lines<\/h2>\n

They added that their mother had been watching\u00a0Fawlty Towers<\/em>\u00a0the day before she passed.<\/p>\n

Scales had been diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2013, a condition that slowly took her away from the public eye but never dimmed the affection audiences felt for her. People close to her realized something was wrong in 2003, when she began struggling to remember her lines during a stage production.<\/p>\n

Her husband, veteran actor Timothy West, died in November of last year.<\/p>\n

The couple, married for more than six decades, shared two sons and one stepdaughter, as well as seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would like to thank all those who gave Pru such wonderful care at the end of her life,\u201d her family added. \u201cHer last days were comfortable, contented, and surrounded by love.\u201d<\/p>\n

Defined British comedy<\/h2>\n

Over a career spanning nearly seven decades, Scales became one of Britain\u2019s most beloved comic talents. Her breakout came in the BBC sitcom\u00a0The Marriage Lines<\/em>\u00a0(1961\u201366), where she played a frustrated newlywed alongside Richard Briers. But it was her role in\u00a0Fawlty Towers<\/em>\u00a0that made her a household name.<\/p>\n

Playing opposite John Cleese, who portrayed the bumbling hotel manager Basil Fawlty, Scales turned Sybil \u2014 with her signature perm, sharp suits, and cutting wit \u2014 into one of television\u2019s most memorable characters.<\/p>\n

When Basil\u2019s plans inevitably collapsed into chaos, Sybil would sweep in to set things straight, or to take advantage of his latest disaster. Cleese\u2019s Basil, terrified of his domineering wife, often referred to her behind her back as \u201cthe dragon,\u201d \u201cmy little piranha fish,\u201d or \u201cmy nest of vipers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scales, standing at just 5-foot-3 next to Cleese\u2019s towering 6-foot-5 frame, met his manic energy with unmatched comic timing and authority. Her sharp delivery of \u201cBASIL!\u201d became an iconic moment in British TV history.<\/p>\n

Speaking about the show years later, Scales said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel very grateful for Sybil.\u00a0Fawlty Towers<\/em>\u00a0was very hard to make, but it was very stimulating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyond Fawlty Towers<\/h2>\n

Scales\u2019s acting range extended far beyond comedy. She earned a BAFTA nomination for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett\u2019s\u00a0A Question of Attribution<\/em>\u00a0(1991).<\/p>\n

Still, to millions, she would forever remain Sybil Fawlty \u2014 the unflappable foil to Cleese\u2019s chaotic Basil.<\/p>\n

Later in life, she found a new audience with her husband, Timothy West, in Channel 4\u2019s\u00a0Great Canal Journeys<\/em>. The series followed the couple as they navigated waterways across Britain and Europe, sharing tender reflections on love, aging, and her struggle with dementia.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t start out thinking it was going to be an especially exciting performance for people to watch,\u201d West said in a 2023 interview. \u201cBut for 10 series, we made canals captivating. We were good at it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their onscreen partnership became a symbol of enduring devotion. The Guardian once called the show \u201cone of the greatest love stories on TV.\u201d West, who often cared for Scales as her dementia progressed, reminded viewers that love and laughter could coexist with loss.<\/p>\n
