Finding a tick attached to your child can be frightening, but staying calm and acting quickly are essential. Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick close to the skin and pull upward steadily, avoiding twisting, burning, or covering it with petroleum jelly. Clean the bite, photograph the tick, and record when and where it was found. Over the following weeks, watch for an expanding rash, fever, headache, fatigue, or unusual symptoms. Contact your child’s clinician about concerning signs or a potentially high-risk bite, as preventive antibiotics may be appropriate in certain cases. Prompt removal and informed follow-up help protect your child.
